What Is Confirmation of Payee (CoP) and How Does It Work?

How we help you confirm payee details to protect against fraud.

Confirmation of Payee (CoP) is a security check we use when you add a new payee or update someone’s account details. It helps make sure your payment is going to the right place.

Once you’ve entered the account name, sort code, and account number, we’ll check those details with the payee’s bank. You’ll then see one of the following responses:

  • Exact match – The name and details match.

  • Close match – The name is similar, but not exact.

  • No match – The name doesn’t match the details.

  • Unable to check – We couldn’t confirm the details, possibly because the payee’s bank doesn’t support CoP or they’ve opted out.

If there isn’t a match, don’t feel pressured to make the payment. Always double-check with the person or business before going ahead. If you’re ever unsure, send us a message from the Help section of the app and we’ll support you.
