Why Do I Need to Add a Reference When Setting Up a New Payee?
Understanding payment references and when you’re required to include one.
When you add a new payee or update an existing one, you may be asked to include a payment reference. This helps the person or company you're paying identify your payment.
In some cases, an additional reference may also be required — for example, if you’re paying a business or utility provider.
Common examples include:
-
A customer number when paying your gas, electricity, or water bill
-
A booking or invoice number when paying for a service
-
A personal reference (such as your name) when sending money to someone’s account
If you’re unsure which reference to use, always check with the person or business you’re paying — they’ll let you know what to include.
